Swift Creek Mill Theatre 2010-2011 Season

More than ten years ago, I started doing most of the graphics work for Swift Creek Mill Theatre’s productions. Not because I had any skill or talent, but more because I was willing and free. I do better on some shows than others. Here are the shows for the upcoming season:

The Foreigner is the season opener. It’s a classic comedy that I, embarrassingly, have never seen. I’m really looking forward to it. There are a number of people in it that I don’t know, which is kind of exciting. And at least one that I know and LOVE! For this one, I took a picture that I already had of my friend Roger and cut out everything but his suit. I snagged an image of a bowler hat from the NAPP website (National Association of Photoshop Professionals - membership has its privileges) and used a typewriter font for the title.

When my mother asked me if I wanted this mink jacket that she’s had hanging in her closet, I thought “Ewww, no!!!” But I’m so glad I took it! Paired with some go-go boots and worn by my favorite model, Audra Honaker, it was perfect for The Winter Wonderettes, which is playing in the Nov-Dec slot.

I love Once On This Island! It was written by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, who also wrote Ragtime and Seussical, and is playing from the end of January through the beginning of March. I pieced this one together from a bunch of different stuff. This is Tom’s favorite. I like the colors!

I’ve done Quilters. I’m not a big fan, but I’m definitely in the minority on that. You can decide for yourself if you head to the Mill next April or May. This was a photo of an empty field that I took the last time I was in Leesburg, VA. I used a pattern overlay on the title, a criss-cross embossing effect over the whole thing, and there ya have it. I plopped the cabin in as an afterthought. It needed something.

This one is my favorite. Once again, Audra Honaker stars in my poster, this time as the terrified damsel in distress. She would actually be really good in this part, but I don’t think she’s going to be here. Not that I have anything to say about casting anyway. Come see this one next June/July. It’s a great thriller!

That was my Facebook status a few days ago when I realized that I hadn’t posted one thing since I went to Amy’s in May. It’s not like I have nothing to blog about. I’ve done two weddings, 14 headshot sessions, 1 senior session, production photos for “Moon Over Buffalo,” and took a trip to New York! But since all of that isn’t going to happen today, here’s a picture of Lily that I took over the weekend.

I spent a few hours with my sister and her kids last weekend. I hadn’t seen them since before Christmas (I’m such a loser), so I finally took Dominic his pirate costume (thanks, Lisa!).

We also needed to remedy a minor crisis for Emma. How adorable is she?
(Who needs a stinkin’ school picture?)

I didn’t expect to get this one, but I’m sure glad I did! It’s getting framed!

Irene Ziegler just wrote a new book called Ashes to Water. I can’t wait until it’s released. I loved Rules of the Lake!

Anyway, a few weeks ago she emailed me to tell me that her publisher had chosen a photo NOT taken by me for the bio section. Bummer. That’s okay, we took some new ones that they’ll certainly want to use NEXT TIME!

Children’s Photographer {Fairy Tale Ball} - Richmond, VA

This was my fifth year taking photos for Theatre IV’s Fairy Tale Ball. It’s a great fundraiser! The Empire is decorated in the style of the upcoming show, the kids are all dressed up in either fancy clothes or costumes, there’s food, drink, and dancing, and everyone has a fabulous time! I basically spend the night following children around and snapping their pictures. Here are a few of my favorites from this year.

I’ve had a ton of headshot sessions over the past few weeks. That is often the case when a musical is in rehearsal at Theatre IV. The Sound of Music is opening tomorrow night. I did photos for three nuns and one of the Von Trapp children.

Steamer Company No. 5

Built in 1849, Steamer Company No. 5 is Virginia’s oldest firehouse, and is now home to Gallery 5. It’s right around the corner from “my studio” at Theatre IV, so I’ve driven by there a million times thinking that I really should stop and take some photos. One morning a couple of weeks ago, I finally did.

I’ve got six headshot sessions this week! But since I still haven’t posted the ones from last month, I thought I better do that before I get all bogged down in editing.

This is Scott, my across the street neighbor. He calls me Gladys Kravitz because I keep tabs on his comings and goings (I don’t really, but don’t tell him).

Tess was my neighbor about 16 years ago, and I hadn’t seen her since she was about 5 years old. Her family moved to Ohio, where her parents are the artistic directors of the Ohio Shakespeare Festival. Tess is currently on tour with Theatre IV.

And this is Emily. She and her mom came up from Newport News. We had the greatest time! She had an audition coming up, so I’m waiting to hear the good news.

The Violin

My favorite girlfriend’s boyfriend, Andy Cleveland, is a mean fiddle player. I was at Janine and Andy’s last weekend to take some photos of a violin that Andy had built for a client. Paul DiPasquale (of Neptune fame) carved the head. It’s truly beautiful and sounded amazing. I’m sure Andy hated having to part with it!

I should also mention that Ginnie and I stayed for dinner - penne a la vodka - which was out of this world delicious!
